đź‘» Is Your Performance Management Process Haunting You

It's almost Halloween, and for some organizations, the thought of another round of performance reviews is downright frightening!

If your process feels more like a dreaded annual exercise than something that actually improves performance, it may be time for a change.

Here are four ways to take the fright out of performance management:

1. Make feedback more frequent.

An annual review shouldn't be the first time employees hear how they're doing. Regular check-ins help address concerns early, recognize progress, and prevent surprises.

2. Make it a conversation, not a monologue.

Employees should have a voice in discussions about their performance. Ask what's going well, where they're experiencing challenges, and what support they need to be successful.

3. Be careful with ratings.

Ratings can be subjective and sometimes tell us as much about the person giving the rating as the person receiving it. Focus on specific behaviors, results, and meaningful feedback rather than just a number.

4. Don't save documentation for review time.

Managers should capture accomplishments, challenges, and feedback throughout the year. Otherwise, reviews can become more about what happened recently than an accurate picture of overall performance.

Performance management shouldn't be something managers and employees dread. Done well, it creates clarity, strengthens accountability, supports development, and helps people succeed.

If your organization conducts annual reviews in January, you still have time to improve before the next cycle.

At InfluenceHR Consulting, I help organizations move beyond outdated annual reviews with Performance Management Redesign—creating practical processes that clarify expectations, make feedback more meaningful, and make accountability part of everyday leadership.

If your current process needs a refresh, I'd welcome a conversation.
